Heron Touring

This is one of the original Heron Touring frames built up for loaded touring and all around riding. The frame was designed by Grant Peterson of Rivendell and Bridgestone and was silver brazed by Waterford Precision Cycles. The frame size is 57cm (you can find the geometry on Heron Bicycles Website). This frame has round fork blades, long horizontal dropouts (so it could be used for singlespeed or fixed gear) and is made of Reynolds 531 steel tubing. The frame has clearance for tires of up to about 38mm with fenders.

The Heron Touring was designed shortly before the Rivendell Atlantis and has a lot in common with the Atlantis. The geometry of this bike is almost identical to the 58cm Rivendell Atlantis. The Heron has the advantage of being made in the US, having clearance for larger chainrings, and having a nicer paint job (in my opinion). The Atlantis has the advantage of fitting larger tires.

I'm selling this bicycle built up and ready to ride. All parts on it are in excellent condition and most are nearly new. Mount a saddle, pedals, fenders and a rack and you're ready for a ride across town, the state, or the country. The photographs below show the bicycle exactly as it will be sold. The parts spec is as follows:

  • Frame and Fork - Heron Touring
  • Handlebars - Nitto Noodle 44cm
  • Stem - Nitto Technomic Deluxe 10cm
  • Seatpost - Ritchey 27.2mm (brand new)
  • Wheels - Shimano LX hubs, Sun CR18 rims, DT 14/15g spokes. Built by Sheldon Brown.
  • Tires - Schwable Marathon 38-622 (700c x 38mm)
  • Crank - Sugino XD with Tange cartridge bottom bracket (brand new)
  • Gearing - 48/38/24 chainrings, 12-32 XTR 8sp rear cassette (20" - 108" gear inches)
  • Shifters - Shimano indexed bar end shifters, 8sp
  • Front Derailleur - Suntour XC Pro
  • Rear Derailleur - Shimano XT SGS
  • Brakes - Tektro Oryx
  • Brake Levers - Shimano 105 Aero
  • Headset - Tange 1" threaded

The frame is in very good condition. There are a few small chips and other flaws in the paint, but they are all very minor. The paint has a nice sparkle to it that is hard to see in photographs.

Price: $1275 (as shown)

I'd prefer to sell to someone in the Seattle area so that they can test ride the bicycle and examine it closely before taking possesion. If I don't get any local offers I will sell the bicycle via mail. The seller will pay for professional packing and shipping by a TiCycles.
