The Acrostic program allows you to enter the grid for an Acrostic puzzle, and the numbers that cross-reference the clues, and then solve the puzzle without worrying about the bookkeeping any more. Any letters entered in the grid are simultaneously entered in the words, and vice-versa.

Until recently this was only mildly exciting, as making the cross-reference entries is DULL, DULL, DULL.

But now, The New York Times on the Web is publishing the Acrostic as a web page, and that web page can be SAVEd by your browser AS an HTML file. The Acrostic program can read that HTML file and extract the cross-reference numbers and the clues, so all you have to do is enter the spaces (and maybe hyphens) in the grid with a few mouse clicks, load the HTML file, and off you go.

More detailed instructions are in the HELP for the program.  Acrostic II includes instructions to load a new Acrostic from HTML.  See the README here, and in the distribution for more information.

Solving the puzzle is now much nicer, especially if you do not do it alone. I originally wrote this program because we found that the one of the two of us having most of the fun was the one not holding the pencil.

Your comments will be welcomed by michael@phred.org. (And if you will send me your e-mail address I will keep you informed of changes to the program.)

Changes may be necessary if you wish to continue to use the program after the NYT makes changes to the web page which the program uses to load the acrostic. The first format change which 'broke' the program was September 28, 1997.   Read Fixes and Updates below for details of more recent changes to the program.

Clear Acrostic (for Windows):

This program will "unsolve" the THM files used by Acrostic. It can save the solutions in a file. Download ACROCLSU.EXE (1,510,912 bytes) from here. The installation method is the same as that for Acrostic, except for the name of the CAB file.

Setup Notes for Windows Versions 5.04 and later:

Version 5.06 is now compiled with Microsoft Visual Basic Version 6, Service Pack 5. Read this article - Q197298 if you have a problem with the "Setup" on your machine. My installing SP5 is supposed to have solved it.

The information following is still correct regarding what happens during Setup. Any problems mentioned appear to have been solved by the installation of Service Pack 5.

Since version 5.04,  Acrostic has been compiled with Visual Basic/Visual Studio 6.0 and packaged with a new Wizard that creates a CAB file for distribution.  The Setup program produced by the new Wizard has a behavior which has disconcerted some people.  It installs 7 files, telling you about each one, and then it may say that Setup cannot continue because your system is out of date.  It did this to me on a new Win98 machine.  The only response if you wish to install Acrostic is to continue.  Setup updates the file(s) that it needs, restarts your machine, and then you run Setup again.  It will copy those seven files once more to TEMP, and then continue to install Acrostic, and again remove the seven files from TEMP.

The seven files are copied to a TEMP directory, then their versions are checked against the files in the SYSTEM directory.  If any of the seven files is newer in TEMP than in SYSTEM, then a message is issued that your system needs to be restarted before setup can continue.  This will replace the older file(s) in SYSTEM with those in TEMP.

When Setup is run again, the process is done all over again, but the SYSTEM files are all now current, and the message to re-boot is not given.

This information was gleaned from an article Q193034 in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. The 5.05 version is not subject to the problem described there. The Service Pack for the compiler (SP4) that fixed it is installed. (Now SP5 has fixed it again). See Q197298

Life would be simpler if Microsoft would not choose to update your system on the back of my program.  Anyway, once your system is up to date, installing Acrostic places the following files on your system, in the PROGRAM directory:

ACROSTIC.EXE the program
ACROSTIC.HLP the help file
ST6UNST.LOG used to un-install Acrostic
VOICES a directory which contains 0.WAV, 1.WAV through 9.WAV, the voice files
COMDLG32.OCX Common Dialog (file open, close, etc functions).  This file could be placed in the SYSTEM directory as many programs use it.  But rather than overwriting your file I'll use some of your disk space for a private copy.  This file has not been modified by me in any way.  In version 5.04 this file is installed in the SYSTEM directory.

Usually:
SYSTEM is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
TEMP is C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
PROGRAM is C:\PROGRAM FILES\ACROSTIC
These may be different depending on choices made during the configuration of your computer.

Fixes and Updates:

Date: 3 June 2003
Description: Updates to REALBasic Programs.

Oops.  The displayed clue operations added a lot of overhead that made the turning of the gears really obvious.  Added code to prevent clue formatting on intermediate moves of the entry boxes.

Version: Acrostic II Version 1.2.2

Date: 2 June 2003
Description: Updates to REALBasic Programs.

Improved instructions for loading the NYT Acrostic, and added capability to print the instructions.

The clue displayed under the pattern now underlines when the mouse is over it, making it look more like a link.  The 'hot' area of the clue that when clicked brings up Google is now limited to the text of the clue.

Version: Acrostic II Version 1.2.1

Date: 25 May 2003
Description: Added 3 new Mac and Windows programs that are
Version: Acrostic II Version 1.1.5.

Date: 22 September 2001
Description: Added "Clear Acrostic" program.
Version: Version 1.0.

Date: 19 September 2001
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 8pm EDT, 19 September 2001
Description:

Necessary fix: Changed the HTML parser to (1) allow either CR or LF or both as line end characters, (2) to stop looking for numbers after it had found the last one needed and (3) to assume that a clue has not ended until it has more than one character.

(1) fixed a problem first seen with the 9 September 2001 puzzle where Carriage Returns were used where there had been Line Feeds before. This caused Acrostic to hang in a loop.

(2) fixed a problem where parsing the last 3 digits of the number 2001 in the NYT copyright message at the bottom of the page caused the program to note that the "Number 1 had already been used".

(3) fixed a problem parsing clues that start with an underscore, not in quotes.

Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5.06".
How to Fix: Remove ACROSTIC (See the note about possibly needing Administrator rights) from your computer, using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Then download ACROSU.EXE Version 5.06 (1,780,224 bytes) from here or from the link at the top of the page and re-install the program. Installation instructions are at the top of this page.

Date: 6 June 1999
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 8pm EDT, 6 June 1999
Description:

Necessary fix: Increased the possible dimensions for the Acrostic.  The Acrostic for 6 June 1999 uses a new layout with a narrower and deeper grid.  Making this fix to the current code brought in some changes that are complete if not perfect.  Read on ...

New Features: Added an option to have the location of the last space entered spoken by the computer (well, it is actually my daughter, Catherine, and the clipped numbers are the due to my inexpert editing).  The spoken numbers make it easier for me to enter the numbers because it saves me from having to keep looking from the screen to the pattern.  I'm working on a more technically more sophisticated version using the Microsoft Speech Development Kit, but it lacks the charm of this first effort.  Also I can't figure out how to use Setup to install the Speech files on a machine other than the development machine

Added some more information to the Help About screen, most of it of little value, but it answered some questions that I had, and I learned how to do something that I did not know how to do before.

Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5.05(32)".

Date: 20 February 1999
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 4:45 p.m. 20 February, 1999.
Description: Corrected a bug in the HTML parser which caused the puzzle for 17 January 1999 to not load successfully.

(Now compiled with Visual Basic/Visual Studio 6.0 which uses a CAB file for distribution.)

Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5.04(32)".

Date: 18 March 1998
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 10:00 p.m. 18 March, 1998
Description: Increased dimension selections when entering a new Acrostic. This was made necessary because the shrunken puzzle published on 1 February.1998 had a last clue of "U". Sorry this took so long, but the computer with the compiler was in the shop. (Still is, bought a new one.)
Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5.03(32)".

Date: 23 November 1997
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 10:00 p.m. 23 November 1997
Description: Improved HTML parsing to make it less sensitive to errors in the downloaded web page.  The NYTimes has been quite creative introducing errors to challenge me.  This version is able to parse the 11/9/97 and the 11/23/97 pages, both of which crashed Version 5.01.
Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5.02(32)".

Date: 28 September 1997
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 9:00 p.m. 28 September 1997
Description: Revised HTML parsing to accommodate the revised format of the NYT Acrostic clues page first seen on this date.
Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5.01(32)".

Date: 28 September 1997
Application: 16 Bit program (ACRO5-16.EXE).
Description: Removed the program from the site.

Date: 22 June 1997
Application: 32 Bit program (ACROSU.EXE) downloaded before 10:22 am EDT 22 June 1997
Description: Improved wrapping of the entry box which used to stick in the last letter of words in the right hand column. Now the box will always wrap to first letter in the next word in the left column, or to the first letter in the grid, if it was in the last word.
Version: Changed the version reported by HELP ABOUT to "Version 5(32)".
